Foot care in summer

TipsReading time: 4 minutesUpdated: August 2026

In summer feet have a harder time than most people think. They are outdoors more, walk barefoot more often and sit in footwear that gives little support. Exactly the combination callus and cracks love.

1. Flip flops are not walking shoes

A flip flop has no heel counter, so the heel pad expands freely outwards with every step. That is one of the main causes of cracked heels in summer.

Alternate. Wear flip flops for what they are meant for and choose a shoe that encloses the heel for longer walks.

2. Bare feet on hard surfaces

On a terrace, a tiled floor or a wooden deck your sole takes every impact without cushioning. The body responds with extra callus on the pressure points.

Do not walk barefoot indoors all day. A slipper with a cushioned sole is more comfortable than it sounds.

  • Alternate flip flops with closed shoes
  • Dry properly between the toes
  • Wear pool sandals in shared showers
  • Keep moisturising in the evening, even in summer

3. Moisture and heat

Pool floors, shared showers and warm, damp shoes are where athlete's foot spreads. Wear pool sandals and dry your feet properly after swimming.

Do not forget between the toes. Moisture lingers longest there and that is usually where it starts.

4. Moisturising is still needed

Many people skip foot cream in summer because it is warm. Yet feet dry out faster then because of sun, sand and sea water.

Moisturise in the evening with a urea cream. During the day it is not needed: you do not want a slippery sole inside a flip flop.

5. A visit before your holiday

A treatment just before your holiday stops you setting off on long walks with a corn or a crack. Callus gone, nails at length and skin supple.

Book that appointment a week in advance, so any tender spot has settled before you leave.

Patty's tip

Do not wait until something hurts. A small spot that bothers you when walking is solved in half an hour; the same spot after three months usually is not.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I get more cracks in summer?

Because of open footwear and drier skin; the heel pad expands freely and the rim tears.

Can I wear nail polish on holiday?

Yes. Do give the nail a few days without it now and then.

Is sea water bad for my feet?

Not bad, but drying. Rinse off and moisturise in the evening.
