In winter the skin dries out fastest. Daily moisturising and letting shoes dry then matter more than in summer.
Heating takes moisture out of the air and therefore out of the skin. Feet that sit in a lined shoe all day and rest by the heater in the evening dry out faster than you think. Cracks build up in those months and you only notice them in spring.
A lined winter shoe holds not only warmth but also moisture. Alternate between two pairs so each can dry for a day. Do not put them straight on the radiator; newspaper inside the shoe works better and does not damage the leather.
Choose socks that absorb moisture, such as cotton or wool, and make sure they do not pinch at the toes. A sock that is too tight causes pressure points just as a shoe that is too tight does.
Do not warm cold feet with a hot water bottle or directly by the heater. The skin senses the heat less well and a burn happens easily.
